It was in a storage shed in Prairie Grove, AR near S. Summit and E. Cleveland. <br />
<br />
Here's some of the details I can think of that are kind of distinctive:<br />
<br />
Had Arkansas antique plate number I300<br />
77 kz400 frame<br />
81 kz440 LTD motor, front forks, and wheel<br />
kz440 2-1 factory exhaust with Emgo megaphone muffler<br />
79 kz400 rear tail piece and seat<br />
80 kz550 rear 18" mag wheel with drum brake<br />
70 cb350 tank<br />
72 cb350 cv carbs (3-D stamped on the sides)<br />
Emgo superbike bars<br />
Oury grips<br />
<br />
I just want my bike back. It's worth more to me than anyone else. If you did it or know someone who did it, please put it back and email me or something so I know it's there. I really don't care if the police get involved or not, just want it back. If I can drum up some cash I may be able to pay some sort of reward as well. Here's some of the most recent pics. It has a metal flake silver gas tank and tail piece. The sidecovers are a faded red or orange with OHC 400 emblems. The last pic is older, but it shows the exhaust that's currently on it.<br />
<br />
Please email me at hatchethairy@yahoo.com or call/text 479.621.1327 for any details or information. Also feel free to share or social media the shit out of this, I really want my bike back.<br />

<br />
Ignition switch located and bracket welded in. 8N3679C is the switch part number usually intended as a replacement for Ford tractors.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/C6CAAF46-A332-46E8-B713-1E6777C0EFB8.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/C6CAAF46-A332-46E8-B713-1E6777C0EFB8.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Headlight mini toggle mounted in the headlight bucket. 275-0325 from Radio Shack. This switch will require a relay.<br />
<br />

<br />
12v voltage regulator from a cb350 mounted to the seat pan.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/6BD08642-468F-4BC0-844E-BFE8BBB02B26.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/6BD08642-468F-4BC0-844E-BFE8BBB02B26.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />

The frame, triple trees, shocks, and exhaust have all be painted. Things should be going back together very quickly now.<br />

I bought this foam camping mat a while back with a seat in mind. It's rubberish and seems like a better match for riding than the closed cell overly dense crap I'm using on the <a href="http://mulliganmachine.blogspot.com/search/label/kz440%20superbike">kz440</a>. I want to say it was around $20 but should be enough to make another seat.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/0DA97492-6936-41D0-A9C0-D4F7AEA58888.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/0DA97492-6936-41D0-A9C0-D4F7AEA58888.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
A quick spray of some gray paint I had laying around before gluing pieces of the mat down.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/1A99CABA-DCFE-484D-8C1B-065A012F072E.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/1A99CABA-DCFE-484D-8C1B-065A012F072E.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Rough cut with a hacksaw blade after gluing 4 layers on. I should have got out the turkey carver instead as it would have done a much cleaner job of things.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/9370FD0B-FAC6-4724-B43C-3506D6D1B7E6.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/9370FD0B-FAC6-4724-B43C-3506D6D1B7E6.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Then I used an angle grinder with a somewhat worn sanding disc to do final shaping.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/6D937561-87E3-4327-91ED-65CD3F3FB1CB.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/6D937561-87E3-4327-91ED-65CD3F3FB1CB.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />

<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/FD2829F6-05DF-4EC5-90A8-8DDD920BFB8E.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/FD2829F6-05DF-4EC5-90A8-8DDD920BFB8E.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
I got a quote from a local upholstery shop to cover it in vinyl, and it's just not budget friendly for the <a href="http://www.ozarkmountainscramble.com/">OMS</a>. So, I ordered up some inexpensive diamond quilted black vinyl and some matching material for the sides. I'll post up my crappy attempt when it all gets in.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/T2eC16JHJIIE9qTYI7D9BRgJ6RJO60_57.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/T2eC16JHJIIE9qTYI7D9BRgJ6RJO60_57.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />

<br />
Also I want to note that I apparently welded the baffle the wrong direction for good flow. It has since been flipped and finish welded in. Just needs scuffed up and a coat of high temp paint.<br />
<br />

Unfortunately I ran out of wire and won't be able to pick up a new spool until Thursday evening. In the meantime I will shift focus to things I can work on without the need for a welder.<br />

Luckily when a project stalls for a while new ideas pop up that eventually make the cut. I decided to cut some of the old mounts up and re-purpose them on the new section.<br />
<br />
The outer shell for double shear, and the threaded internal bung.<br />
<br />

<br />
And the other side. They have since been tacked in place ready to finish weld.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/5EF51F58-F50C-4454-9FA1-F6AE34C5FDCD.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/5EF51F58-F50C-4454-9FA1-F6AE34C5FDCD.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
I then moved on to making a headlight bracket. It still needs some trimming, but I couldn't make much more noise for the evening.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/05E271AA-67A0-4173-B03C-7357CBFB649E.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/05E271AA-67A0-4173-B03C-7357CBFB649E.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />

Mounted to the tree.<br />

<br />
On to the seat pan. I cut out a chunk of a spare fender, and went to doodling making a template for the base.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/798726F9-9388-4D2F-A636-D01D869C15D3.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/798726F9-9388-4D2F-A636-D01D869C15D3.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Then made from metal.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/E86E1DA5-25DA-4C0E-BE3D-65508F87D8DB.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/E86E1DA5-25DA-4C0E-BE3D-65508F87D8DB.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Now with mounts and a cover for the tank mount. Just needs some foam carved out and covered.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/789B0C37-E849-4842-ABF2-11D1BA4F59AF.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/789B0C37-E849-4842-ABF2-11D1BA4F59AF.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />

<br />
I'm going to get all of the finish welding done, and then start putting everything back together. Hopefully it will be rolling down the road in a week or two.captain awesomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07486410331375814363noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6171486440295705828.post-88108331694218803962014-10-27T10:10:00.000-05:002014-10-27T10:11:17.003-05:00tt500 build : part 15Motor is back together.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/A9DA19F8-0A2B-4D06-B426-5141744801C6.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/A9DA19F8-0A2B-4D06-B426-5141744801C6.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Time to do work on the frame. I got the welds on the loop nice and smooth. Front tank mounts removed.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/ABD47163-5B35-432A-8797-2C0FEB164A74.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/ABD47163-5B35-432A-8797-2C0FEB164A74.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Lower triangle gussets tacked.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/A6ADA3C4-094A-496F-AE8D-A454DEDB18A2.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/A6ADA3C4-094A-496F-AE8D-A454DEDB18A2.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
The cb350 tank just wasn't working out how I had hoped, so I found a decent steel early model xt500 to use instead. Unfortunately the mounts are in a slightly different location for the aluminum tank models. The rear tank mount has been moved forward using part of the old bracket and some 2" flat stock.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/F06D6187-4DDE-48BE-AECC-5ACD9E4BF1EA.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/F06D6187-4DDE-48BE-AECC-5ACD9E4BF1EA.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />

<br />
Front tank mounts were made with these fancy base mount metric nuts. I sleeved them in some 1/2" tubing and tacked to the frame resembling factory mounts.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/E6F06109-98D3-433F-AEC3-FF4AE05FEBCF.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/E6F06109-98D3-433F-AEC3-FF4AE05FEBCF.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />

<br />
Mounted up it looks like this.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/607B3AC8-4A71-4554-B055-3D40F39DF23C.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/607B3AC8-4A71-4554-B055-3D40F39DF23C.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/A8D3D542-1F5B-47DA-82D9-3F4B192ACF62.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/A8D3D542-1F5B-47DA-82D9-3F4B192ACF62.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
On to the rear fender mounts. The front mounts are rubber bushings from the help section at the auto parts store. They are sitting on 1/2" tubing stubs.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/F90EE65F-135A-477A-BE40-27B8435D5C31.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/F90EE65F-135A-477A-BE40-27B8435D5C31.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />

<br />
Then a simple flat stock bracket for the rear mount.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/902F13F9-81E2-43D1-8D11-82517266058F.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/902F13F9-81E2-43D1-8D11-82517266058F.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
The brake light I got a while back fit the profile of the duckbill just right. I welded it to the inside of the fender, just needs a little bracing to make sure it holds up to the vibrations.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/95F166DD-0BE7-4A1B-A96B-906BCFA6C99D.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/95F166DD-0BE7-4A1B-A96B-906BCFA6C99D.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />

<br />
The to do list is getting shorter, just need to do some finish welding on brackets and figure out the seat pan. If I keep at it, this will be my Ozark Mountain Scramble ride for next year.<br />

Took a few glamor shots. Notice the Cycle Shack pipes I scored for a few bucks shipped. They aren't in perfect condition, but at least they provide some back pressure and noise reduction. The drag pipes were just stoopid loud.<br />

Blew the front head gasket last night putting around the neighborhood. I don't think this bike likes me too much. Going to replace that this evening and hopefully work my way into it's good graces.<br />

For instance, maybe you decide to take the front sprocket off and take a look around. By chance alone, you just happen to notice the mainshaft that should be riding on needle bearings, is in fact riding on thin air. Is it luck that I found it now before hitting the road? Yes. Still sucks though. Enough whining, here's some pics.<br />
<br />
Ghost bearings.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01677.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01677.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01681.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01681.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Apparently someone previously reinforced the countershaft bearing area. This support is probably the only reason the trans didn't destroy itself.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01728.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01728.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01733.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01733.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
The mainshaft would bend under load and rub against the bearing race. You can clearly see where the two tried to get frisky.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01723.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01723.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01710.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01710.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Empty.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01742.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01742.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Fortunately I found an NOS mainshaft for about the same cost as the cheaper aftermarket ones. The bearings, race, seals, etc. added in put the total cost to $186.21 including shipping. Not bad at all.<br />
<br />
Going back together.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01999.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC01999.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC02000.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC02000.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Jump ahead a bit, and I started to make a battery mount for the YT4B-BS I got off of ebay for less than $20 shipped.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC02041.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC02041.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC02044.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC02044.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Then a bracket to locate the coil off the top motor mount. Don't mind the wires, they were replaced last night for some at the proper lengths.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC02045.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC02045.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
I'm wrapping up the front brake anchor and cable setup, then it's on to wiring and adding oil. The internals were some of the cleanest I've come across other than a brand new bike. It's nice for the bike not to fight me for a change.<br />

<br />
Cut a handful of these off.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/DSC01936.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/DSC01936.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />

<br />
File them down.<br />

<br />
Ready for some light sanding and a good Scotch Brite rubbing.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/DSC01950.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/DSC01950.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
New seals in and back together. I need to get some new dust boots, but these will do the trick for now.<br />

The rear tire has been installed, and while doing so I noticed the bearings were locked solid. No movement at all. I tried to remove them by my usual method with a hammer and drift, but no go. Heat and penetrating fluid didn't make a difference. I found a thread on the sr500 forum that said to use a 5/8" concrete anchor bolt as a blind bearing puller. For less than $2, why not right?<br />
<br />
Shove the bolt and sleeve through the bearing leaving the nut and washer facing out. Grip the sleeve with a pair of channel locks or vice grips and tighten the nut. Once things are nice and snug tap the bolt from the other side with a drift until they drop out. The first bearing on the brake side came out nice and easy, but when attempting to remove the second one, the sleeve got tweaked. Luckily I bought two.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/DSC01926.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/DSC01926.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
I decided to try and pull two from the sprocket side at a time and see if that would be easier. They slid out like butter. That gave me enough room to knock the stubborn brake side one out with a drift.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/DSC01927.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/DSC01927.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
All done with new bearings and seal from All Balls. Notice my 5 gallon pickle bucket under the wheel? It has a fancy <a href="http://www.amazon.com/IRWIN-420-001-Bucket-Tool-Organizer/dp/B00009K777" target="_blank">Irwin tool organizer</a> that was gifted to hold my tire and bearing service tools. I know you can by the wheel stands, but this thing doesn't take up much room, works great, and best of all was free. Changing tires is easier than one would think, and bearings can just drop in the bucket instead of chasing grease soaked parts across the floor or bench.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/DSC01929.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/tt500/DSC01929.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
I've also been replacing a few seals here and there as well as some worn out hardware. Countershaft seal, clutch actuator and seal, clutch adjuster assembly, countershaft nut and locking washer. Currently the tx750 forks are apart for new seals and a general cleaning. More on those soon.<br />

<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01793.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01793.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
NOS steels from ebay.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01790.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01790.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01792.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01792.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
I went ahead and got some springs as well. The difference between stock and the EBC ones are about a 1/8" or so in height. The lever doesn't feel any heavier though, so that's a plus.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01791.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01791.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01789.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01789.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Unfortunately things didn't go to plan on re-assembly. I didn't count how many steels I installed assuming that the ebay ad was correct on the number listed. Apparently I got a free one, but didn't know it, and until I removed the side cover for the 4th time and pulled everything back apart did I realize what happened. A 20 minute job took about an hour and a half due to my ignorance. Always count your fibers and steels. Always.<br />
<br />
To further my issues, the crank seal on the side cover decided to stop sealing. On my first test ride, oil began to leak heavily out of the points cover. Good news is the seal is cheap, and the clutch worked flawlessly. Bad news is that my countershaft seal is leaking, so I will be replacing that in the next day or two to get things nice and oil tight for good.captain awesomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07486410331375814363noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6171486440295705828.post-91126192543412186662014-07-18T09:41:00.000-05:002014-07-18T09:41:17.479-05:00kz440 superbike : 15Since the Ozark Mountain Scramble, I have had a short list of items that need to be addressed other than just getting rid of the rainbow colored body work. My most recent ride reminded me of how annoying it can be to try and ignore them. Weather was good. Scenery was nice. The bike however just needed attention.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/10475020_507945629307197_136853690_n.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/10475020_507945629307197_136853690_n.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
The top end jetting was just way too fat, and after 600 hundred plus miles, it was obvious that it won't fix itself. I have dropped two sizes on the secondary mains with good results so far, but not enough miles to confirm that was enough.<br />
<br />
The shift lever kept stabbing my foot since it was bent, so I straightened that out so everything is where it should be. Nice and proper now for gear changes.<br />
<br />
Rear brake light switch was sticking, so who knows whether people knew if I was stopping or not. I think I have that fixed for now, but will be tracking down a better quality switch to swap out at a later date. <br />
<br />
I also have a small oil leak coming from either the shift shaft seal or the countershaft after warmup. I bought both seals, but after pulling the cover it appeared to be from the shift shaft alone. With my cheap seal puller it came out without any fuss.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01766.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01766.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01763.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01763.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
The shaft itself has some discoloration where the seal rides, but no grooves or low spots are worn.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01765.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01765.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01764.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01764.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
The new seal slid in nice and easy.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01762.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01762.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Last but not least on the to do list, the clutch slip. Extremely annoying especially with the previously fat jetting. Any time I have the mixture in the sweet spot, the clutch slips like crazy. I rev hard, and the bike barely moves forward. This is especially evident at higher RPMs. If I accelerate slowly the problem disappears.<br />
<br />
The steels are pretty bad. They have some rust etching on all sides, and the friction discs are worn unevenly throughout the stack. The pics don't show the issues well at all. I decided to order up some new steels, friction discs, and springs to see if that would fix the problem.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01768.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01768.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01769.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/kz440/DSC01769.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Here's where I left off. Waiting on parts while we are getting some of the most unseasonably cooler weather I have experienced in July. Perfect for riding, but I'm waiting. Nice.<br />

<br />
We will meet at 9 am on day one at <a class="d-s" href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=D&oi=plus&q=https://maps.google.com/maps?expflags%3Denable_star_based_justifications:true%26ie%3DUTF8%26cid%3D16988668143333768819%26q%3DSUBWAY%25C2%25AE%2BRestaurants%26iwloc%3DA%26gl%3DUS%26hl%3Den" tabindex="0" target="_blank">2511 N 2nd St #1 Rogers, AR 72756</a>. Everyone can meet, greet, and go over the days route before departure at 9:45 am. I will have a few extra copies of the route map, just let me know if you need one. The more prepared you are, the better for the group overall, so please show up with a <b>tank full of gas</b>. If you are running a bit late, or have any issues that the group can help resolve, call Derrick at 479.621.1327.<br />
<br />
There are quite a few gas station options from day to day, however there are a handful that only accept cash without any ATMs near. Be prepared and bring a couple Lincolns in your man purse.<br />

Haven't updated at all, so I figured it was time to do so.<br />
<br />
Just a quick reminder of what I started with.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC00583.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC00583.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
The Corbin seat was traded for an early 60's seat, that was then traded for an 18" front drum wheel. I found an 18" aluminum rear to match, then mounted some Dunlop k70 tires 4.0x18 front and back. Rear bearings have been replaced. The front have as well, but with 3/4" ID to fit the later axle, and the brake plate opened up to match. The front forks will stay, I just need to figure out a brake stay and axle spacers. New brake shoes should be dropping in any day now to get the wheels all buttoned up.<br />
<br />
Swapped out the bars for some Emgo superbikes that I split and narrowed to fit the one piece riser. Also picked up a pair of cheap drag pipes and an air filter for the time being. I've got my eye out for replacements, but for now there are other things to address.<br />
<br />
Some OMS alumni have donated some parts as well. A nice leather sprung solo seat and an early xlch tank with the screw in cap and left side drain plug. I need to fab some brackets for the tank, seat, and make a battery tray for the smaller <span class="g-asm" id="ttl_400498584918">YT4B-BS AGM I picked up. I'm sure there's some other stuff I am missing, but that's the majority. Hopefully I can have it rolling down the road in the next month or so.</span><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC00001.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC00001.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Swingarm bearings need tightened. The weight of the bike makes it pretty obvious, but on the jack it's even more so. It wiggles ever direction imaginable.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC00002.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC00002.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC00003.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC00003.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Fork legs were swapped from left to right to utilize the old caliper mount. I should be able to anchor from it with a simple bracket and keep the brake plate fairly close to stock positioning that a 33mm front end would have.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC00004.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/ironhead/DSC00004.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Missing a dust shield and maybe a washer or two in the trees. The bearings were assembled with absolutely no grease whatsoever. Nice.<br />
<br />

To get started required collecting all of the suspension and wheels so we could figure out how to piece it together.<br />
<br />
The front end will be off an xr75 with an xr80 neck and bearings.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01154.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01154.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
The front wheel is an old 17" spoolie chopper wheel a member had laying around with bearings swapped out to fit the xr75 axle, and machined aluminum axle spacers.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01152.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01152.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
For the rear a Honda xl350 rear rim laced to the stock cb350 hub. Holes drilled for rim locks.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01150.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01150.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
M-H vintage drag slick.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01149.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01149.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />

<br />
All of the parts in the same space to figure out where the frame tubing will go.<br />
<br />

<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01164.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01164.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />

<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01159.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/DSC01159.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
A little sketching here and there.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/20131226155705.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/20131226155705.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Getting the basic dimensions and angles figured out for the frame. None of this is set in stone, but for the most part how things will lay out. Axle plates are 17mm version A from here <a href="http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6077">http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6077</a>. The frame will be 1" tubing for everything but the backbone which will be 1 1/2".<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/dimensioned.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/dimensioned.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/degreed.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww326/hatchethairy2/cb350%20drag%20bike/degreed.jpg" style="width: 450px;" /></a><br />
<br />
This isn't the final rendering, but close to what we are trying to achieve.<br />

I now have the majority of materials needed to start putting it all together, so the next post should be jig construction.captain awesomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07486410331375814363noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6171486440295705828.post-19023488411440567772014-04-29T11:34:00.000-05:002014-04-29T11:36:44.951-05:00cb350 supercharged drag bike : 01A while back our vintage riding club decided to build a drag bike for the HAMB drags at Mokan Raceway in Joplin MO. Each year they hold a vintage traditional styled drag meet with very few motorcycles, so we wanted to try and spark some competition. Originally we started working with a CA77 61 Dream 305 motor, but ended up using one of my spare cb350 motors instead.<br />
<br />
The motor will remain mostly stock as far as internals go, but an Aisin amr300 we got shipped
over from Australia will be forcing induction. An
alcohol prepped draw through 33mm Amal setup will provide fuel. Here's some pics of the progress building the intake and pulley system done by one of the club members.<br />

The stock plate for the SC was a bit thin, so a new one was machined to take it's place.<br />

That just about catches everything up for the motor. I will get a post up shortly to cover the forks, wheels, and frame.captain awesomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07486410331375814363noreply@blogger.com0
