OMS cl360 : 04

Finally buttoned up the CL motor, so progress is starting to happen now. Had to cut down an aftermarket cam chain to fit, so there were a few minutes of head scratching to figure out the what, where, and how of that. I managed to take that op to snap a shot of the motor mid assembly.

While I was waiting for engine parts, I finished reassembling the rest of the bike. I was lucky enough to have an extra low mile 18" x 4" tire laying around, so I mounted it up with a new tube and strip. I also snagged a low buck seat on Ebay. Rolling around the yard and seeing it look like something got my motivation up a bit.

I decided to go simple and hit the motor with a quick coat of high temp silver just to keep things clean.

As soon as the paint was dry I wrestled the motor in the frame and mocked up the exhaust.

I was dying to fire it up last weekend, but the points advancer was toast and I had to wait for a replacement. It came in this week, so I got the carbs on and points in and set Friday, and she fired up yesterday. I still need to rebuild the petcock, replace the front tire and some cables, and pick up a drive chain. She's pretty close now though.

I had some down time while waiting for parts, so I decided to make use of my time and clean up the CL a little bit. It's been crazy hot, so I rolled the bike into my den and went to town. It didn't take long to reduce things to a pile of parts.

After a bit of cleaning and spray bomb action, the CL was ready to start reassembling.

In the mean time, I picked up a set of old tunable cocktail shakers to replace the rotten stock mufflers. They were a bit crusty, but a few minutes of polishing made them almost presentable. I still may ended up painting them.

I'm hoping to button up the motor this weekend, so I can start hammering out the finer details soon.

As they say, two heads are better than one. The cam journals on the CB were roached, so that head was a no go. A few of the CL valves were too rusty to use, so a transplant was made from the CB. The CL head needed one new seat, a valve job, new seals, and a bit of milling on the gasket surface area. The cylinders got a little attention as well with a fresh honing. Now I need to order a timing chain, a head gasket, and a seal kit. Should be buttoned up pretty soon.

Snagged a '74 CL360 with a stuck motor on the way home from the 2013 OMS for 200 bones. She's titled and pretty much complete. The P.O. had already pulled the head, so I decided to pull the cylinders to see if it was just stuck rings or bottom end issues. Fortunately, it was just stuck rings. I have a spare CB360 motor with a toasted cam and journals, but the pistons and jugs are in good shape. So rather than bore the CL cylinders and source new pistons, I've opted to get the CB jugs honed to reuse with its original pistons and freshen up the CL head with a valve lapping and new seals for reuse the original cam. Hopefully I'll have time to drop things by the machine shop this week, so I can get the motor back together quickly. As for the rest of the bike: it looks like a new battery, some cables, carb kits, tires, and another seat should get her back to in order.

Here it is as I received it.

The headers are in good shape, but the mufflers are shot.

As she sits now.

The motor awaiting a fresh top end.
